Lansing is a
village in Cook County, Illinois, USA. Lansing is a
southern suburb of Chicago. It is located 6.9 miles
from Chicago city limits at 138th Street, and 25.6 miles
from the Chicago Loop. The population was 28,332 at
the 2000 census.
Lansing was incorporated in 1893.
The first family to settle in Lansing was that of August
Hildebrandt. Henry, George, and John Lansing settled
the area in 1846. It was mainly settled by Dutch and
German immigrants; hence, there is a large Dutch and
German population in Lansing. Harry Smith, co-anchor
for CBS' The Early Show and the host of A&E's Biography
series, is arguably the most prominent person to have
come from this suburban village. Drummer Demetra Plakas
from the early 1990s metal band, L7 (band), hails from
Lansing as well, graduating from TFS in 1978.The Detroit
Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson graduated from TFS.
